We just came back from an amazing trip to Portugal and Morocco. One of the highlights was riding a camel in the Sahara. Here is my selfie with my camel. We also witnessed the most amazing moon rising in the middle of the desert. Pretty blessed.

I am excited to welcome Phyllis Chapell to the roster. She has spent her life developing a universal musical style singing “world songs.” Her repertoire includes songs in 13 languages from Brazil, Latin America, Europe, Africa and the Middle East, as well as American folk, jazz, originals and popular music. Phyllis Chapell has been named as one of the top 500 jazz vocalists of all time by Scott Yanow (Down Beat, Jazz Times and AllMusicGuide). DistilINFO - Three major social determinants of health factors are particularly predominant barriers to care for America’s seniors: economic instability, loneliness, and food insecurity, according to a study sponsored by Alignment Healthcare. Loneliness - a fifth of seniors reported that their loneliness had increased in the past year. While nearly seven out of ten seniors see a family member, friend, or another companion often throughout the week, 16 percent of seniors only see a companion every two to three weeks.
Walk this number of steps each day to cut your risk of dementia
CNN - Want to reduce your risk for dementia? Slap on a step counter and start tallying your steps – you’ll need between 3,800 and 9,800 each day to reduce your risk of mental decline, according to a new study. Just 2 minutes of walking after eating can help blood sugar, study says
People between the ages of 40 and 79 who took 9,826 steps per day were 50% less likely to develop dementia within seven years, the study found. Furthermore, people who walked with “purpose” – at a pace over 40 steps a minute – were able to cut their risk of dementia by 57% with just 6,315 steps a day.

2 nurses assaulted every hour, Press Ganey analysis shows
Hospital Review - More than 5,200 nursing personnel were assaulted in the second quarter of 2022, with patients being the largest source of violence, according to newly released data from Press Ganey.
In the second quarter of 2022, an analysis of Press Ganey's National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators showed that on average, two nurses were assaulted every hour. That translates to about 57 assaults per day and 5,217 per quarter, according to findings published Sept. 8. The findings are based on the organization's analysis of 483 U.S. facilities in its national database.
Older adults with regular activity routines are happier and do better on cognitive tests, study finds
Medical XPress - Older adults who consistently get up early and remain active throughout the day are happier and perform better on cognitive tests than those with irregular activity patterns, according to a new study led by University of Pittsburgh researchers.
Observation - the get up early part was an interesting find.
Learning new language keeps dementia and Alzheimer's at bay, say experts
News 9 - Studies show that language learning improves cognitive ability over time, which can have several benefits for overall mental health. Learning a new language pushes the person to expose himself to new expressions, ideas, and people.
Observation - I tried Italian during Covid. I have had to restart it several times. Not as easy as it seems or was when I was in high school. I think some people are more prone to have that learning ability.
Few Americans plan to delay collecting Social Security – Schroders survey
Pensions and Investments - Even though 86% of Americans know that delaying Social Security to age 70 would dramatically increase their monthly benefit, only 11% plan to do so, according to the third installment of the Schroders 2022 U.S. Retirement Survey.
Observation - count me in that group. I start collecting six months early in October. Minimal monthly impact over time.

McKnight’s - Residents in long-term care did not suffer steeper cognitive declines because of COVID-19-related isolation, countering a fear widely held early in the pandemic, according to a research letter published online in JAMA. Article here.
Study finds potential link between daily multivitamin and improved cognition in older adults
CNN - Taking a daily multivitamin might be associated with improved brain function in older adults, a new study says, and the benefit appears to be greater for those with a history of cardiovascular disease.
The findings did not surprise the researchers – rather, they were shocked, said Laura Baker, an author of the study and professor of gerontology and geriatric medicine at Wake Forest University in North Carolina.
