Our ‘golden years’ are about saving enough money — but having choice, autonomy and agency matter even more
MarketWatch - If you’re a retiree or pre-retiree, your financial adviser might be acting as an amateur gerontologist with you. That’s because some advisers also see themselves as life coaches, dispensing advice to older clients about how to boost longevity and enjoy a healthier, more vibrant retirement.
Observation - I was quoted extensively in this article.
Most Pre-Retirees Unprepared to Retire by Age 65
NAPA - Findings from a new study show that the majority of retirees and pre-retirees are not financially prepared for retirement and lack sufficient savings to fully retire at age 65.
According to Disconnected: Perceptions vs. Reality in Retirement Planning from The Stanford Center on Longevity (SCL) and Finance of America Reverse (FAR), the median retirement savings of those surveyed were valued at $128,000 and more than half (55%) of respondents reported their financial situation as “fragile” or being “just able to get by financially.”
Many Americans lied about COVID-19 risk during pandemic, study shows
UPI - At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 40% of Americans were untruthful about whether they had the virus or were ignoring safety precautions, a nationwide survey shows.
The December survey of 1,700 people found 721 respondents had either misrepresented their COVID-19 status or failed to follow public health recommendations.
Omega-3 may provide a brain boost for people in midlife
MedicalNewsToday - According to a new study published in Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology, people who have higher omega-3 levels in their middle ages may have an edge over people who take in lower levels of omega-3.
New study questions the effectiveness of colonoscopies
CNN - A landmark study suggests the benefits of colonoscopies for cancer screening may be overestimated. The study marks the first time colonoscopies have been compared head-to-head to no cancer screening in a randomized trial. The study found only meager benefits for the group of people invited to get the procedure: an 18% lower risk of getting colorectal cancer, and no significant reduction in the risk of cancer death. It was published in The New England Journal of Medicine.
Observation - Wow. That’s going to cause a huge pain in the butt for physicians and hospitals who have a cash cow with these regularly scheduled procedures. Truth though, I will still get my next one at 70.
The most (and least) accessible U.S. cities for people with disabilities
BenefitsPro - When it comes to diversity, equity, and inclusion in hiring, employers often fail to consider people with disabilities. In fact, a recent study from the Return On Disability Groupshowed that although 90% of companies said they prioritized diversity, only 4% took disability into account when constructing their initiatives. With 61 million Americans living with some kind of disability, according to the CDC, this is a sadly untapped rich resource for employers.
#Dementia TikTok Is A Vibrant, Supportive Community
NPR - There are more than 16 million people in the U.S. that are caring for someone with Alzheimer's and related dementias. More than two-thirds of them are women. Caregiving can be emotionally and physically draining, as well as isolating. There are not a lot of resources available for caregivers and many are not paid. For six years, Jacquleyn Revere took care of her mom who had dementia and posted about the highs and lows on her TikTok account. Revere gained thousands of viewers and followers who could relate to her. Many of whom were also caregiving for a loved one with dementia. Michigan Public Radio reporter Kate Wells shares Revere's story and how a niche corner of TikTok became a place of community and support.
One quarter of clinicians say they want to switch careers, survey finds
McKnight’s - Some 25% of physicians, advanced practice providers and nurses surveyed said they are thinking about switching careers, and 33% want to leave their current employer.
The survey, from global consultancy Bain & Company, included a random sampling of 573 full-time clinicians across various specialties, including geriatric medicine. Qualified respondents spent at least 50% of their work week on direct patient care, and worked in either private or group physician practices, hospitals or healthcare systems.
