Pickleball is popular, but how much exercise are you really getting?
WAPO - Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States, and people — including teenage prodigies and Hollywood celebrities — can’t seem to get enough. But how much exercise are you really getting when you play?
Researchers in Canada explored the answer to that question by measuring the physical activity intensity of singles and doubles pickleball in older adults.
The peer-reviewed study, published in the Journal of Aging and Physical Activity, suggests that pickleball can provide a moderate workout for middle-aged or older people. But they would need to play as much as 4.5 hours a week to meet recommended exercise guidelines.
Does beer hold the key to fighting Alzheimer’s disease?
NYPost - Hoppy beers, in moderation, could help to reduce dementia, a study suggests. Researchers from the University of Milano-Bicocca tested four common varieties of hop flower extracts that are found in beer to see how well they would help to prevent brain protein clumping, which can lead to Alzheimer’s.
Hop flower extracts are used in all beers and have natural anti-oxidants that are believed to protect cells in the body.

Nurse accused of amputating man’s foot for her family’s taxidermy shop
WAPO - Mary K. Brown had plans for a dying man’s foot, according to a recently filed affidavit. As the registered nurse amputated her patient’s right foot on the afternoon of May 27, she told colleagues that her family owned a taxidermy shop, the affidavit alleges. Her co-workers recalled her saying that she planned to take the 62-year-old patient’s foot from the nursing home in Spring Valley, Wis., and display it at the shop. According to them, she said she wanted to put a sign next to it: “wear your boots kids.”

‘Substantial’ decline in dementia rates due in part to higher education levels: study
McKnight’s - The prevalence of dementia in older adults in the United States declined 30% between 2000 and 2016, possibly due to rising education levels, a reduction in smoking and better treatment of cardiovascular risk factors, according to a new study published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Observation - there seems to be new studies weekly that either say dementia rates are growing or declining.
