Let their stories be your inspiration as you set resolutions for the year ahead.
Nursing homes risk another wave of covid deaths as vaccinations lag
WAPO - Fewer than half of all nursing home residents in the United States have received the latest coronavirus vaccine booster shot — and rates among nursing home staff are even worse — raising concerns that vulnerable elderly people face a spike in preventable covid-19 deaths this winter.
Observation - I guess we have learned nothing.
100-year-old woman makes custom jackets by hand and gives them away
WAPO - One after another, the women appeared, each wearing a handsewn, customized jacket crafted by Nancy Epley. The jackets each told the story of the wearer’s life.
About 25 women, all wearing Epley’s jackets, modeled the garments and shared the stories behind them.
“They walked the runway,” said Epley, 100, who has spent the past 40 years crafting jackets by hand.
Ageism is one form of bigotry that never seems to get old
WAPO - From the author - “For decades, living in the United States as a relatively healthy White Protestant man isolated me from the bigotry — as well as the benefits (i.e., programs and services) — reserved for minorities or members of special interest groups. Eventually, though, something happened that landed me in a special interest category: I woke up one day to find myself “old.”
Observation - great article.
Can a hobby keep dementia at bay? Experts weigh in.
WAPO - To many, the word “hobby” signifies something lightweight or trivial. Yet taking on a new hobby as one ages might provide an important defense against dementia, some experts say.
Observation - I think this is code for lifelong learning. That is what a hobby allows you to do and that is key a longer quality life. And speaking of learning…..

Older adults who own dogs report better overall health and more physical activity
PsyPost - When it comes to pet ownership increasing the welfare of elderly people, dog really is man’s best friend. A study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health suggests that dog owners may be healthier than cat owners or people with no pets.
Observation - we have fish. Does that count?
Hydration can significantly impact your physical health, study finds
CNN - You may know that being adequately hydrated is important for day-to-day bodily functions such as regulating temperature and maintaining skin health. But drinking enough water is also associated with a significantly lower risk of developing chronic diseases, a lower risk of dying early or lower risk of being biologically older than your chronological age, according to a National Institutes of Health study in the journal eBioMedicine.
Walgreens Finds Care partners with Music Health to offer music app for dementia patients
Drug Store News - Music Health's music wellness app, Vera, is now available through Walgreens Find Care to provide people living with different forms of dementia with convenient and affordable access to personalized music from their computers and smart devices.
Observation - they went the extra mile in partnering with Universal Music Group for the rights to songs. We always applaud efforts like these. Sage Stream is on a parallel path, working to achieve the same goals.
Connecting With Older Adults Is Good For You and Them
Psychology Today - A body of evidence demonstrates that older people benefit from relationships with younger generations through improvements in cognitive function, lower anxiety, and increased physical activity, to name a few. Additional evidence shows that young people benefit from these relationships through improved attitudes toward older adults, skill and communication development, and support derived from meaningful relationships.
52% of patients say their symptoms are ignored: survey
Becker’s Hospital Review - Fifty-two percent of U.S. patients said healthcare providers dismiss their described symptoms, according to a new MITRE-Harris poll.
The survey was conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of MITRE from Sept. 27-29 among 2,047 U.S. adults 18 and older, according to a Dec. 20 news release.
Among Black and Hispanic respondents, the number who said they experience bias and doubt was even higher, at 6 in 10 people. These patients made comments such as, "My healthcare provider is biased against me based on their attitude, words or actions." Also, half of survey participants reported they have experienced a healthcare provider "assuming something" about them without asking.
Uptake remains minimal for population health management
BenefitsPro - Population health management was once heralded as the ideal solution for employers seeking to provide employee health coverage that achieved two goals: a healthier employee group at a lower – or at least a predictable – cost. But, as a recent survey underscores, the concept remains largely conceptual.
Observation - news flash, the concept has always been conceptual. I have been in healthcare for nearly 40 years and this concept around for half. Truth is no one likes risk and fee for service is more lucrative. This concept is no closer to reality than the ideas that Heathcare systems are focused on customer experience.
Vitamin D supplements reduce seniors’ loss of strength by 70 percent: study
McKnight’s - Loss of muscle strength is a major risk factor for declining physical activity and function in later life. Vitamin D supplementation may play a role in reducing that loss, a new study has found.
Observation - I take it every day.
