San Antonio woman in her 90s spends her time crafting dog beds for animal shelter
KSAT - Joan Potters’ room has transformed into a makeshift workshop — colorful fabric swatches and sewing tools on nearly every surface.
Every day, you can find Potters, 93, carefully crafting dog beds from fabric scraps left over from the Greater San Antonio Quilting Guild.
“I just am happy to do it for them and to know that some dog is going to be comfortable,” Potters said.
They Love Tech. They’ve Got Money. Why Does Silicon Valley Ignore Old People?
NYT - Silicon Valley isn’t just consumed by youth; often, it’s blinded. Look at Facebook. Mark Zuckerberg created the social network for college students, but Facebook has been struggling to hang on to young users for more than a decade; usage by people over 25 has steadily grown over that time, and along with YouTube, Facebook has become the internet’s most popular social network among people over 50. This wouldn’t seem terrible for a company that makes money from advertising, as Facebook does. After all, older people are the future of business: According to a recent analysis by AARP, people over 50 now account for more than half of the world’s consumer spending, and their share is projected to grow to 60 percent by 2050.

McKnight’s - It’s not just the young who can’t stop scrolling. Adults aged 65 or more years now are spending about 300 hours every year on social media, and a fourth of them spend more than an hour a day on platforms, a new study shows.
Although the research found that older adults largely use social media for entertainment or out of boredom, the study participants did find that almost half of older social media users also seek health-related content online.
At 97, the First Lady of Fitness Is Still Shaping the Industry
NYT - Elaine LaLanne’s morning exercises often begin before she’s even out of bed. Lying on top of the covers, she does two-dozen jackknifes. At the bathroom sink, she does incline push-ups. After she dresses and applies her makeup, she heads to her home gym, where she walks uphill on a treadmill for a few minutes and does lat pull-downs on a machine.
“Twenty minutes a day gets me on my way,” she said at her home on the Central Coast of California.

WAPO - “We all know that Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias are among the most common conditions humans can encounter as they age,” said Stephanie McGrath, associate professor of neurology at Colorado State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. “What people don’t realize is that our pets — dogs and cats — can get it, too, and it’s probably also very common.”
