Costs rise, quality falls after nursing home acquisitions: review
McKnight’s - As acquisitions in US seniors housing and senior care continue at record levels, a new paper in an international medical journal finds such transactions typically bring about a rise in costs and a drop off in quality.
Public health and epidemiology researchers from five universities in three countries reviewed dozens of studies on private equity ownership and found that an escalation in private equity takeovers across healthcare settings has led to higher costs for patients and payers. Several studies also found more ensuing harmful health outcome impacts than beneficial ones, they reported in BMJ on Wednesday.
Observation - not surprising. Happens with hospital acquisitions all the time.

Small Acts of Kindness Can Have Big Impacts on Recipients, Study Finds
Nice News - Researchers conducted a series of experiments involving different situations and participants. In each, Axios reports, they studied how people perceived various small acts of kindness, such as offering someone a ride home, baking them cookies, or paying for a cup of coffee. They consistently found those on the receiving end of a kind gesture appreciated it more than the giver had anticipated.
“Performing random acts of kindness increases happiness in both givers and receivers, but we find that givers systematically undervalue their positive impact on recipients. … those performing a random act of kindness consistently underestimated how positive their recipients would feel, thinking their act was of less value than recipients perceived it to be,” the study authors explained.
New Study Finds These Popular Games May Lower Your Risk of Dementia
Prevention - The researchers assessed the participants for dementia during regular visits throughout the study. They found that those who regularly participated in “adult literacy activities”—think: using a computer, taking educational classes, writing letters, or journaling—and those who engaged in activities that exercised their brain, such as games, cards, chess, puzzles, or crosswords, were 9% to 11% less likely to develop dementia than their peers.

Good deeds are tied, specifically, to better executive function and episodic memory.

Australia launches 'national wellbeing' dashboard to measure prosperity beyond GDP
PGIM - Australia on Friday launched a "national wellbeing" dashboard of indicators to measure progress on issues like health, education and the environment, one that it hopes will lead to a better balance between economic and social objectives.
It will track indicators across five categories - healthy, secure, sustainable, cohesive, and prosperous - that can be viewed on an online dashboard and will be updated annually.
Observation - pretty brilliant. They are taking the idea of social determinants of health and applying it to community living.
Comparing superagers to typical older adults reveals significant lifestyle and brain structure differences
Medical XPress - Lifestyle factors such as physical activity, educational attainment, and socioeconomic status were closely associated with the superaging phenotype. These factors are commonly associated with age related dementia prevention or delay. Having a musical background and, perhaps surprisingly, being separated or divorced versus being married or cohabiting were associated with superagers.
