Free Sage Stream Programming
Interested in finding professional and family caregivers who would commit to watching one week of free Sage Stream programming (a one-hour show, Monday through Friday) with a loved one or client on a traditional platform (YouTube, Facebook, Zoom). In exchange, would want feedback through a survey and also participation in a post-event town hall to discuss the impact, relevance, value proposition, need and desirability. Survey Finds Older Adults Are Slowly Warming To Streaming Audio.
Inside Radio - People aged 55 and older are not typically at the cutting edge of technology. But the pandemic has brought about more rapid shifts in media habits during the past few years, even among older Americans. Among the findings in new research from Broadbeam Media is the more video streaming services an older person subscribes to, the more likely they are to use streaming audio. The report finds those with five or more streaming services are 6.5-times more likely to listen to streaming audio than people who don’t subscribe to any streaming services.
Observation - not a far stretch to think people will warm to streaming live video from Sage Stream too!
Animal therapy, technological interventions improved loneliness in older adults
Helio - Animal therapy and technological interventions in long-term care facilities were shown to improve loneliness in older adults, a systematic review published in JAMA Network Open showed. Interventions assessed included animal therapy, psychotherapy or cognitive behavioral therapy, multicomponent, counseling, exercise, music therapy, occupational therapy, reminiscence therapy, social interventions and technological interventions.
Observation - Sage Stream checks two boxes - music therapy and tech.
Optimizing hearing aid use can improve quality of life for older adults with dementia
McKnight’s - Older adults with dementia may benefit from improving their hearing aid handling skills, according to the findings of a study newly published in JAMDA. The new study suggests that using a mutli-facteted approach to hearing device interventions can help older adults living with dementia better handle and use their hearing aids, address their motivation to hear better, and ensure that they have adequate support and encouragement to use hearing devices.
UK researcher explores multisensory approach as potential treatment for Alzheimer’s patients
University of Kentucky - “Aging dramatically alters and decreases the effectiveness of sensory modalities in our body to take in information. Our hearing gets worse, our vision gets worse, our balance, our touch — our sensory systems just degrade. Enhancing sensory input through the body is one way to soothe and nourish the brain,” said Elizabeth Rhodus, Ph.D., assistant professor in the University of Kentucky’s Sanders-Brown Center on Aging, Department of Behavioral Science and primary faculty of the Center for Health Equity Transformation.
1 in 10 Americans over 65 have dementia, study finds
CNN - One in 10 Americans over 65 had dementia, while 22% experienced mild cognitive impairment, the earliest stage of the slow slide into senility, according to a new study conducted between 2016 and 2017.
The research, which the authors said is the first nationally representative examination of cognitive impairment prevalence in more than 20 years, was able to measure prevalence of dementia and mild cognitive impairment by age, education, ethnicity, gender and race.
This online resource helps older adults prepare for doctor’s visits
WAPO - Between new technologies, a confusing health-care system, hurried providers and health issues such as memory and hearing loss, doctors and aging patients sometimes have trouble finding common ground. And negative stereotypes about aging can leave patients feeling condescended to or unheard.
A free website can help older patients prepare for those conversations.
It’s packed with information from the National Institute on Aging on everything from choosing a doctor to confronting sensitive issues — and it’s designed for both patients and caregivers.
Vanilla Beane, the District’s ‘Hat Lady,’ dies at 103
WAPO - Vanilla Beane, whose radiant hats topped the heads of legions of African American women at church, weddings and funerals in the District for half a century, earning her the title of “D.C.’s Hat Lady,” died Oct. 23 at a hospital in Washington. She was 103.
The cause was complications following an aortic tear, said her grandson Craig Seymour.
Ms. Beane’s hats, which she had designed and fabricated at Bené Millinery and Bridal Supplies shop on Third Street NW, were featured on postage stamps and in collections at the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Every hat was one-of-a-kind.
Shingles vaccine offers a decade of protection in older adults
EPR - GSK announced Shingrix (Zoster Vaccine Recombinant, Adjuvanted), the first approved shingles vaccine to combine a non-live antigen with a GSK-made adjuvant, can prevent shingles (herpes zoster) for at least decade.
Observation - my mother had shingles and they are no joke. I have had both shingles shots and while I had a reaction to the first, all is good now.
