Virtual museum visits can battle social isolation, improve quality of life in older adults, study finds
McKnight’s - Weekly virtual museum visits can help improve quality of life for older adults at high risk for poor health outcomes from social isolation, according to a new study. The authors hope that the activity could become a model offered worldwide.
The research, published in Frontiers in Psychology, found that older adults who attended weekly online guided tours over three months experienced substantial improvement in well-being.
Observation - This is such a great find. It shows beyond a doubt that watching live, interactive, programming has benefits to older adults. We have one museum on board and have reached out to more. Do you know a museum that would like to participate? Get in touch. Thanks.
Pickleball, Sport of the Future Injury?
NY Times - Pickleball injuries were on the rise even before the pandemic. Oneanalysis, published in 2019 in The Journal of Emergency Medicine, estimated that there were 19,000 pickleball injuries in 2017, with 90 percent of them affecting people 50 and older.
“Achilles’ strains or tears, shoulder problems, rotator cuff injuries, lower back problems such as disc injuries, muscle strains,” said Noe Sariban, a pickleball instructor, former pro player and physical therapist who markets himself as the Pickleball Doctor. And, of course, there’s lateral epicondylitis, commonly known as tennis elbow — now pickleball elbow.
Brain stimulation improves short-term memory in older adults for a month, study finds
CNN - Sending electrical currents into two parts of the brain known for storing and recalling information modestly boosted immediate recall of words in people over 65, according to a study by a team at Boston University published Monday in Nature Neuroscience.
“Whether, these improvements would occur for everyday memories, rather than just for lists of words, remains to be tested,” said Masud Husain, a professor of neurology and cognitive neuroscience at the University of Oxford, in a statement. He was not involved in the study.
Observation - OK. Who’s going first? Just the description will ward off 95% of people. One group received high-frequency (60 hertz) gamma waves to their prefrontal cortex while a different group of 20 people received low-frequency (4 hertz) theta stimulation to the parietal cortex. Step right up.
What older adults do while they sit affects dementia risk, study indicates
Medical XPress - Adults aged 60 and older who sit for long periods watching TV or other such passive, sedentary behaviors may be at increased risk of developing dementia, according to a new study by USC and University of Arizona researchers. Their study also showed that the risk is lower for those who are active while sitting, such as when they read or use computers.
Being more mentally active, like when using computers, may be a key way to help counter the increased risk of dementia related to more passive sedentary behaviors.
Observation - so there is good sitting and bad sitting! Who knew?
Senior living, skilled nursing lead the way in healthcare bankruptcy filings
McKnight’s - Healthcare bankruptcy filings are up 25% this year overall, with the senior care sector — including senior living and skilled nursing — leading the way, according to the results of a new survey by healthcare restructuring advisory firm Gibbins Advisors.
And that trend is expected to continue into 2023, due to the depletion of COVID-19 resources, inflation, workforce shortages and supply chain disruptions. This news comes after large healthcare organization bankruptcies in 2021 were 44% behind 2020 levels.

Roster Additions to Sage Stream
Please welcome Scott Gurney to the roster. He is one of the most versatile pianist/vocalists around. At age 10 he started playing piano and threw himself into the world of music. First it was classical music, then his fascination for jazz led him to study with such notable jazz teachers Adolph Sandole, Larry Mckenna, Jimmy Amadie and Charlie Banacos along with attending the Philadelphia College of Performing Arts.
His professional career began at the ripe age of 13, playing in various local bands. Later he performed with such notable artists as the Drifters, Lou Rawls, and worked in Atlantic City with various lounge artists. Scott soon realized that he loved to sing and he started performing in the greater Philadelphia area as a solo singer/pianist in addition to leading his own bands.
Please welcome Tony Lombardi. Tony has been a performer for over 50 years and has played in bands since the age of 13. Tony plays five instruments, and his main instruments are the piano, keyboards, and the organ. See his bio here.

One sick worker linked to 17 infections and $12K in treatment costs, LTC study finds
McKnight’s - A new study reveals how a single sick caregiver can easily infect residents and co-workers in a long-term care setting and drive up treatment costs by thousands of dollars.
The study, from Japan, explored the clinical and financial impact of rapidly spreading respiratory infections in close quarters. Published in the American Journal of Infection Control, it found that one sick staff member contributed to 17 resident infections and added $12,000 in costs.
Observation - If you’re sick stay home. If you are the organization, pay your workers for sick time. It more than makes up the costs you are losing otherwise.
