After Going Gray, a News Anchor Found Herself the Focus of the Story
NYT - A household name in Canada for decades, Lisa LaFlamme was unceremoniously dismissed last summer by CTV, the country’s largest private television network, after what her employer described as a “business decision” to take the program “in a different direction.” Though her national newscast at CTV had been one of the most watched and she had won a national award for best news anchor just months earlier, Ms. LaFlamme was left to sign off without a proper farewell. Her departure set off multifaceted debates across Canada, especially after The Globe and Mail newspaper reported it may have been linked to Ms. LaFlamme’s hair — which she had chosen to let go gray during the pandemic when hair salons and other businesses shut down. The network’s owner, Bell Media, which denied that “age, gender and gray hair” had been factors, named a 39-year-old male correspondent, Omar Sachedina, as her successor.

‘Strong evidence’ more immigrant caregivers improve nursing home quality: researchers
McKnight’s - Better federal policies to increase the number of immigrants working in nursing homes could help providers get over the hump in meeting expected new staffing requirements, new research shows.
But investigators also cautioned against allowing an influx of immigrants to unintentionally harm the odds of hiring nurses with more education and higher skills. They warned against facilities potentially substituting “low-skilled certified nursing assistants (CNAs) for higher-skilled registered nurses (RNs) and licensed practical nurses (LPNs).”

NC hospital CEO salaries doubled in the last five years
The Carolina Journal - We reported on this last week. But more outlets are picking it up and it deserves a repeat.
A new report released by North Carolina Treasurer Dale Folwell shows that CEOs across North Carolina’s nine largest hospital systems doubled their paychecks in less than five years, half the time than previously thought.
“Getting this information to this point to present to you today is like digging through 16 feet of ash of volcanic ash in Pompeii,” Folwell said Wednesday during a press conference.
He characterized the report as showing a massive transfer of wealth from hospital workers to executives, saying it is the result of the consolidation of hospital systems putting healthcare in the hands of fewer people. “Executives are incentivized to raise profits, not raise quality or access,” he said.
Folwell invited researchers from the North Carolina State Health Plan, Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, and Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy to study executive compensation in hospital systems, including Atrium, Mission, Novant, UNC, Vidant, Duke, Cone, WakeMed and Wake Forest Baptist Health, as well as the Midwest system Advocate Aurora Health that merged with Atrium Health.
