A Knitwear Sensation at 83
NYT - How Delia Barry, the octogenarian who knitted Colin Farrell’s cozy “Banshees of Inisherin” sweaters, became an internet star.
Why music causes memories to flood back
WAPO - This ability of music to conjure up vivid memories is a phenomenon well known to brain researchers. It can trigger intense recollections from years past — for many, more strongly than other senses such as tasteand smell — and provoke strong emotions from those earlier experiences.
My interview with Susan Magsamen Executive Director, International Arts + Mind Lab, Pedersen Brain Science Institute, Jon Hopkins - Condensed.
ENTERTAINING SENIORS AT HOME: WATCH FREE LIVE NATURE CAMERAS
DailyCaring - Preventing boredom in seniors is a great way to improve mood, reduce agitation and anxiety, and improve quality of life overall. But finding new activities that your older adult enjoys and is able to participate in can be a constant caregiving challenge. Many people enjoy nature scenes and observing animals in their natural habitat, but are limited by mobility or what’s near their window or home. Here is a wonderful website called Explore.org that has live camera feeds from places all around the world.
HOW MANY RESIDENTS PER NURSE IN A NURSING HOME? USE THIS SIMPLE LOOK-UP TOOL
DailyCaring - The look-up tool that KHN has created is simple to use. It shows how Medicare rates overall and registered nurse staffing for each facility.
The tool also shows the average number of residents per registered nurse and per aide on the best and worst staffing days.
To find the staffing levels at nursing homes in your area, visit the KHN look-up tool webpage. Then, choose the State and enter the name of a nursing home or the name of the city. These fields are located just below the staffing rating map.
Older adults less lonely since onset of pandemic, major poll finds
McKnight’s - In 2023, 1 in 3 adults ages 50 to 80 (34%) reported feeling isolated from others in the past year. That compares with 56% who felt isolated in 2020 (the beginning of the pandemic) and 27% in 2018, the findings said. The University of Michigan took polls in 2018 and during all three pandemic years using the same questions. The poll is based at the U-M Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation and supported by AARP and Michigan Medicine, the University of Michigan’s academic medical center.
Observation - The numbers are better but still consider that one third of older people feel isolated.
70 percent of assisted living providers still report significant or severe workforce shortage
McKnight’s - Seventy percent of assisted living providers responding to a newly released LeadingAge workforce poll said they still are experiencing a significant or severe workforce shortage.
The snap poll, completed Feb. 21 to March 13, elicited responses from 891 senior living and care providers.
Australian Study Shows Reduced Medication Need With Music Intervention
BMC - There was a reduction of 22.4% in the use of any psychotropic medications, 19.6% reduction in antipsychotics and 6.5% in antidepressants covering 3-months pre- and post-intervention. An individual music program was conducted for eight weeks, two times a week, for 30 minutes per session. Group music was added four weeks in, two times a week, for 50 minutes.
Observation - more proof that solutions like Sage Stream not only contribute to resident well-being and socialization but also to direct health benefits. These benefits in addition to staff savings, planning time saved and the sales advantage music solutions bring make Sage Stream an easy-to-implement, budget friendly solution to your activity program.
