Employee burnout is a warning sign -- about your organization
Benefits Pro - Employers are not doing a good job of addressing the root causes of employee burnout, a new report from the McKinsey Health Institute suggests. The institute found that when it came to employee burnout, companies are doing more to address the symptoms than the causes of the problem.
Institute researchers found that one in four employees in the survey reported burnout symptoms. While employers have invested more in mental health and wellness programs, the survey suggested that wellness programs and mental health apps in themselves do not address the roots of the problem.
Observation - in other words find out why the employee is burned out and fix it. It’s just like social determinants of health!
‘Grandfluencers’ Are Sharing a New Vision of Old Age
On TikTok, the over-65 set is thriving.
NYT - Robert Reeves, 78, spends most days lounging by the pool, taking in the low-desert sun with his friends and neighbors. The four of them talk about what’s new — recovery from a recent corrective foot surgery, some chronic inflammation issues — and record videos for social media, where they’ve amassed millions of followers as the Old Gays. But the Old Gays and their fellow “grandfluencers” are proof that recording viral videos under one roof isn’t reserved for the young. And while these senior influencers may very much be performing for the camera, they’re also sharing a new vision for what it means to live meaningfully with age.
Observation - You go guys!
Ageism could be even more harmful to older adults than previously thought
McKnight’s - When researchers analyzed data from more than 2,000 people aged 50 to 80 from the National Poll on Healthy Aging, they found that older adults who had experienced more “everyday ageism” — defined as age-based discrimination, prejudice and stereotyping in their day-to-day lives — were more likely to be in poor physical or mental health, to have more chronic health conditions such as such as diabetes or heart disease, or to show signs of depression.
Some actions we all can take:
Avoid automatically associating aging with health problems or feeling lonely, depressed, sad or worried — even when speaking about ourselves in a joking manner — to help society in general and older adults in particular stop connecting getting older with becoming less healthy.
Stop joking about older adults being unattractive or undesirable.
Don’t automatically make assumptions about older adults, including their ability to use technology, see, hear, understand, remember or do something alone.
Acknowledge the vitality and value that older adults bring to life.
Nursing home that diverted vaccines to rich donors pays $1.7 million
WAPO - MorseLife has agreed to pay $1.75 million to settle claims that it defrauded a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention program that sought to steer limited vaccine doses to the most vulnerable Americans in late 2020 and early 2021, according to the Justice Department.
The text message from the chief executive of MorseLife Health System, a luxury nursing home in West Palm Beach, Fla., was unambiguous.
“Of course go after the billionaires first,” the CEO wrote to the facility’s fundraisers in December 2020, explaining who should get priority for scarce coronavirus vaccine shots intended for residents and staffers.
He advised: “Do not be weak be strong you have the opportunity to take advantage of everyone who needs the shot and figure out what they have and what we can go after …”
Observation - they (HE) got off light. Despicable.
Most women unaware of increased risk for Alzheimer’s
The Hill - A new survey found 82 percent of women do not know they are at increased risk for Alzheimer’s disease. That’s despite the fact women make up nearly two-thirds of cases in the U.S. According to the survey, 73 percent of women have not talked about their brain health with a physician.
Spirituality predicted improved resident wellbeing during pandemic isolation: study
McKnight’s - Spirituality “can provide a positive, hopeful worldview, offering indirect control over circumstances, thus reducing depression and anxiety,” they wrote. Taken together with prior studies from Brazil and France, the study suggests that spirituality may have helped to protect residents of extended care facilities from the challenges of pandemic isolation, they added.
Flu vax cuts seniors’ dementia odds by 40 percent over 4 years, large study finds
McKnight’s - Older adults with no signs of dementia and at least one flu vaccination were 40% less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease within the next four years than their unvaccinated peers, according to a new study.
Observation - this is pretty significant. I have had my flu shots regularly and my pneumonia, and shingles, and and and…..
Assisted living, CCRC workforce recovery among slowest in healthcare: NIC
McKnight’s - Assisted living communities, continuing care retirement communities and skilled nursing facilities are experiencing slower workforce recoveries compared with other healthcare sectors, according to a new report from the National Investment Center for Seniors Housing & Care. Employment figures remain well below pre-pandemic March 2020 levels, at –5.8% for assisted living and –13.2% for CCRCs.

Customer Discovery for Sage StreamI recently entered Sage Stream in an accelerator program. While I passed the first round and was interviewed, I was ultimately not selected. However the door is not closed. I have been encouraged to reapply to this accelerator in July. The feedback I received is that I need to do more customer discovery to refine the problem and solution. So by now you probably know that Sage Stream is a Senior Education and Entertainment Network that provides daily live-stream programming for older adults in all settings. It was conceived to help relieve social isolation in seniors while solving a key staffing issue for senior living. If you work or consult in senior living, whatever your role, and would be interested in learning more about our vision and share your thoughts about what the marketplace needs, I would welcome a conversation. Please consider a short phone call.
