Social isolation, loneliness may harm cardiovascular, brain health
McKnight’s - Crystal W. Cené, M.D., M.P.H., from the University of California San Diego, and colleagues conducted a systematic review of observational and interventional research that examined the impact of social isolation and loneliness on cardiovascular and brain health and addressed mechanisms for the associations that were observed.
The researchers found the evidence most consistent for a direct association between social isolation, loneliness, and coronary heart disease and stroke mortality.
Observation - of course I never miss an opportunity to promote Sage Stream as a remedy for social isolation. See our pitch video below. We are still actively seeking grants to fund our platform.
Long-term loneliness tied to risk for memory decline
McKnight’s - Cumulative loneliness may be a risk factor for accelerated memory decline in older adults. Data from 9,032 adults (aged 50 years and older) participating in a Health and Retirement Study examoning loneliness duration and memory function were examined from 2004 to 2016.
The researchers found that a longer duration of loneliness was associated with lower memory scores and a faster rate of decline. The association was stronger among those aged 65 years and older compared with those aged younger than 65 years. Additionally, the association was stronger among women than men.
Observation - this supports recent research showing that nearly 20 percent of women over 70 identify as being socially isolated. I know it’s a small this but Sage Stream is a solution for many of these people. Help us fund it.

Grim long-term care forecast: 4 more years until workforce recovers if help doesn’t arrive
McKnight’s - Despite reports of recent monthly gains in the number of long-term care employees, full recovery of the workforce could drag on until 2026 without substantive new assistance. That’s according to a report released Monday by the American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living.
Observation - need help to alleviate activity staffing. Talk to me about Sage Stream.
Even simple exercise may help aging brain, study hints
AP - New research hints that even a simple exercise routine just might help older Americans with mild memory problems.
Doctors have long advised physical activity to help keep a healthy brain fit. But the government-funded study marks the longest test of whether exercise makes any difference once memory starts to slide — research performed amid a pandemic that added isolation to the list of risks to participants’ brain health.
Scrutiny of nursing home corporate ownership fires up again on multiple fronts
McKnight’s - Long-simmering discontent with what some lawmakers and many consumer advocates see as cagey nursing home corporate ownership arrangements erupted last week, thanks to the publication of a new media investigation into one of the nation’s largest nursing home providers.
Scores of plaintiffs have unsuccessfully or unsatisfactorily sued Florida-based Consulate Health Care and are accusing the company of questionable tactics designed to minimize or avert large verdicts, the health news outlet STAT reported.
The investigation follows the late July introduction of a bill that would bring “long-overdue transparency into nursing home ownership and financial activity,” according to sponsors US Reps. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) and Mark Takano (D-CA). Federal regulators have also emphasized the issue this year, with Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSure stressing that transparency of nursing home ownership would be a priority.
Observation - I have been talking about this for years.
Primary care clinicians on front lines of early Alzheimer’s care in rural U.S., study reveals
McKnight’s - Primary care doctors and nurse practitioners, rather than specialists, are more likely to provide care for early-onset dementia in rural areas, putting these patients and clinicians at a disadvantage, say the authors of a new study. The researchers recommend innovative approaches to ensuring specialty care for patients, and training or guidance for clinicians.
Observation - the exact reason we need to be training primary care physicians in dementia care.
Does Vitamin B6 Boost Mental Health?
NYT - Vitamin B6 is involved in a number of chemical reactions that are important for nervous system and brain function, including the synthesis of proteins, amino acids and chemical messengers of the brain, as well as proper functioning of the immune system.
“Vitamin B6 affecting mental health is not a new concept,” said Jess Eastwood, a doctoral student in nutritional psychology at the University of Reading in Britain. In one study of nearly 500 university students published in July, for instance, Ms. Eastwood and her colleagues found that those who took high doses of vitamin B6 — 100 milligrams per day for about a month — reported feeling less anxious than those who took a placebo. Their findings also suggested that B6 might play a role in tamping down the increased brain activity that can occur with certain mood disorders.
