Oldest living French medalist gets another chance to shine at Paris 2024
CNN - Charles Coste did not get to hear “La Marseillaise” when he stood on top of the podium at the 1948 Summer Games in London, but France’s oldest living Olympic medalist will get another moment in the spotlight when he carries the Paris 2024 torch.
‘Forgotten middle’ worse off than prior generations, will need stronger supports in aging, researchers say
McKnight’s - Members of the relatively neglected “forgotten middle” group of near-retirees are worse off in health and finances than their counterparts from more than two decades ago and are going to need stronger support as they age, according to the authors of a new study. Research from USC Schaeffer Center for Health Policy & Economics and the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health published last month in Health Affairs found significant outcome disparities after analyzing the health and economic well-being of five cohorts of Americans in their mid-50s between 1994 and 2018.
They’ve lived 100 years. Here’s their advice about everything
WAPO - We can learn a lot from people who have lived 100 years. WAPO asked 14 centenarians from around the world to reflect on what it takes to live a healthy and happy life, and to share the advice they would have given to their younger selves. Here’s what they said. (I cover a lot of these points in my keynote - The Meaning of Life!)
ChatGPT analyzes speech patterns to identify Alzheimer’s 87 percent of the time, researchers show
McKnight’s - One of the main symptoms of dementia, even at earlier stages, is confusion or speech difficulties, and screeners like the “Cookie Theft” test have reliably been developed to generate a diagnosis.
In reviewing transcripts of these assessments, as well as other speech data, ChatGPT was able to correctly identify Alzheimer’s 87% of the time, a new study shows.
Miss Manners: I left a seniors housing group because I didn’t feel welcome
WAPO - Dear Miss Manners: I changed my mind about moving into a local seniors nonprofit housing group, and they have returned my down payment, as expected.
I am an LGBTQ adult, and with the exception of one gay couple, the other members all seemed to be heterosexual.

New Study: 12% of Older Adults Now Use Cannabis
SciTechDaily - The use of cannabis among older Americans has increased since the pandemic. A recent study focusing on individuals aged 50 to 80 reveals that 12% have used a THC-containing product in the last year, with 4% using it several times a week. Notably, those who consume alcohol at levels considered risky show a significantly higher rate of cannabis usage.
Nose-picking likely ‘partially’ to blame for Alzheimer’s disease: scientists
NY Post - You can pick your nose, but you can’t pick your pathogens.
A review of dozens of published studies into the mechanisms behind neurological diseases has collected strong evidence that people who frequently pick their noses are at a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.
The new report, compiled and written by researchers at Western Sydney University, was published in the journal Biomolecules late last year. (Consider the source!)
My review on Amazon:
Music Has Power in Senior Wellness and Healthcare could be retitled Music Has Power ANYWHERE. While it is a great primer for any senior entity looking to bring music therapy into their toolkit, beyond that, it has great advice for anyone looking to use music to help themselves or a loved one. Whether to relieve pain, alleviate anxiety or just appreciate music more deeply, this book will have you wanting to listen to more music and diverse music and music that touches your life. It is a great playbook for senior living. But after reading, if you leave with a deeper appreciation of the impact of music on healing, the book will be more than worth it. Congratulations Dr. Tomaino.
