The Extraordinary World of Music and the Mind
AARP - It can remind you of the best days of your life. It can comfort you. It can even make those who remember little sing again. This article profiled the great work of IMNF, which I am honored to be on the board.

‘Therapy pigs’ bring joy to local senior citizens
Houston Herald - It’s no secret that animals are sometimes used in roles of therapy. But pigs? If they’re Kunekune piglets, you bet. Texas County resident Mark Bengtson raises Kunekunes at his farm in Huggins, and he recently began taking some young piglets on visits to local senior citizens, including residents of Kabul Nursing Home and Landmark Villa Assisted Living Center, both in Cabool. The results have been remarkable.

Need a Good Cry - Watch This
I was working on a segment on Seniors and Driving for Charlotte Today and I make the point that cars have different meanings for different people. For some, it is just transportation. For others, it has to do with status and identity. For others, freedom. Then this Chevy commercial landed on my lap that says all of that an more.
When the Neighbors Are All Older, Too
NYT - Some seniors prefer age-restricted communities, while others want intergenerational living. There is little research to show which option is healthier. I prefer the latter.
A 5-step prescription to combat loneliness during the holidays
WAPO - The holidays are not always the most wonderful time of the year. For many people, they can be an especially lonely time. Inspired by the U.S. Surgeon General’s 5-for-5 connection challenge, a prescription is to do one daily action to connect with someone over the next five days.
At 33, I knew everything. At 69, I know something much more important.
WAPO - “In my younger days when the news was too awful, I sought meaning in it. Now, not so much. The meaning is that we have come through so much, and we take care of each other and, against all odds, heal, imperfectly. We still dance, but in certain weather, it hurts. (Okay, always.)”
Must Read - Extra Fees Drive Assisted-Living Profits
NYT - The add-ons pile up: $93 for medications, $50 for cable TV. Prices soar as the industry leaves no service unbilled. The housing option is out of reach for many families.
Chronic staffing shortages and the use of technology in nursing homes
McKnight’s - Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, nearly 240,000 nursing home employees (or about 15%) have left the industry. According to a survey conducted by the American Health Care Association/National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL), this has resulted in 87% of nursing home providers facing moderate to high staffing shortages, with nearly half (48%) of those struggling with a severe staffing shortage. Given the realities of the nursing home workforce shortages, Congress and the administration must consider alternate methods of improving care for our resident population. We strongly encourage policymakers to support the employment of technology to supplement the nursing home workforce, and to consider the use of technology when implementing staffing ratios.
Observation - this is why Sage Stream is a no-brainer for activities and quality of life.
Nursing homes’ financial reporting just ‘smoke and mirrors,’ consumer advocate alleges
McKnight’s - Federal and state regulators should require consolidated, audited financial reporting of every nursing home group in the country to get beyond the “smoke and mirrors” and better understand exactly how much owners are making, a consumer attorney and financial auditor says.
