McKnight’s - A federal judge has denied a request to temporarily halt implementation of the federal nursing home staffing mandate, saying that the appeal made by 20 states and 18 LeadingAge state affiliates came up short on virtually all levels.

McKnight’s - A US House of Representatives subcommittee charged with evaluating the government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic acknowledges at least one challenge faced by long-term care providers but doesn’t address the fundamental challenges faced by senior living providers or the industry belief that senior living providers were consistently overlooked for support. Note to self. Next pandemic. Maybe we need Sage Stream to fill in for our entertainers who cannot come on premise! Hmmm.

MSN - Federal data show as of 2022 just over 8,500 people were killed in crashes involving an older driver. That is the highest number recorded since 1975.

Newsweek - A study has found that a low to moderate intake of beer is associated with a lower risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis.
13.9 percent of older adults meet federal physical activity guidelines
Medical Press - Overall, 13.9 percent of adults age 65 years and older met the federal physical activity guidelines for both aerobic and muscle-strengthening activities in 2022, according to a study published online Nov. 26 in the National Health Statistics Reports, a publication from the National Center for Health Statistics. The likelihood of meeting the guidelines was higher among men, White non-Hispanic adults, and those living in metropolitan areas (16.9, 15.2, and 14.7 percent, respectively). There was an increase seen in the percentage meeting the federal physical activity guidelines with increasing education levels and family income and a decrease with the number of chronic conditions.

The Guardian - It’s not just humans who get wiser as they age – animals do too, according to a growing body of research. The bigmouth buffalo fish can reach 127 years old, the Greenland shark 392, and some sponges can live for 10,000 years or more. And age is not just a number: as animals get older they behave differently depending on their life experiences, gain richer knowledge of their environment, and often pass it on to younger members of their group, researchers say.

McKnight’s - Federal oversight of the assisted living industry would be duplicative and would divert resources away from significant work already underway to create best practices for the setting, according to national senior living organizations. I disagree. This is one of the least regulated industries in existent.
