Dilemma: Senior Living Facility Or Kids’ Inheritance?
Forbes - When elderly folks can’t take care of themselves, or fear that day is coming, one option is a senior community. But will that rob their children of a decent bequest? Rick Kahler, president of Kahler Financial Group in Rapid City, S.D., has some answers.
Observation - I never couched the argument like this. Worth the read.
U.S. leads world in health care administrative costs and half of it is wasteful
BenefitsPro - Administrative costs account for 15% to 30% of U.S. health care spending – and at least half of that spending is wasteful.
“Even at the lower end of estimates, U.S. spending on administrative costs annually account for twice the spending on care for cardiovascular disease and three times the spending for cancer care,” according to a HealthAffairs research brief.
Observation - As I continue to say, U.S. has best medical care and advances in world and worst health care system to administer it.
These Doctors Admit They Don’t Want Patients With Disabilities
NYTimes - When granted anonymity in focus groups, physicians let their guards down and shared opinions consistent with experiences of many people with disabilities.
Observation - must read.

Older adults living carefree lifestyles twice as likely to end up in nursing home
StudyFinds - Older adults who lead a carefree, unhealthy lifestyle are twice as likely to end up needing a nursing home in comparison to their more active peers, a new study reveals.
Researchers at the University of Sydney found smoking, physical activity, sitting, and sleep quality to have a strong link to nursing home admission rates. Surprisingly, diet quality alone did not display the same connection.
Observation - yikes! Actually, I do lead a pretty healthy lifestyle.

Barry Wahrhaftig, [War-hof-tig], is the lead guitarist & founder of the Hot Club of Philadelphia. They are an acoustic ensemble, dedicated to playing 'Gypsy Jazz.' That's the term used to describe the music pioneered by the legendary original 'Hot Club of France Quintet,' which was led by guitarist Django Reinhardt and Violinist Stephane Grappelli. Django and Grappelli were attempting to do their own version of American 'Hot Jazz,' as played by stars like Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington. They used acoustic guitars, bass and violin, rather than horns and drums. Grappelli and Django added some French and Gypsy flavor and created a blend of music that is quite popular and accessible. The band performs as a trio, quartet, quintet, etc. The band features vocalists Phyllis Chapell (Sage Stream Roster Member) and Cecilia Ferneborg.

City sides with music venue in asking court to overturn noise case favoring CCRC
McKnight’s - An Arizona continuing care retirement community continues to lose local support in its fight with a neighboring concert venue over noise levels after city officials asked the court to reverse its previous ruling that favored the life plan community.
The city of Tempe filed an amicus brief recently siding with music venue Shady Park in an ongoing dispute with Mirabella at ASU. The brief, according to KTVK/KPHO, asked the court to reverse its previous ruling, saying the judge “mischaracterized” the area as primarily residential when it always has been a mixed-use area.
Observation - love this!
Study: Family caregivers have it rough; pandemic made it harder
McKnight’s - Before the pandemic, women caregivers had significantly higher odds of experiencing health-related socioeconomic vulnerabilities such as food insecurity, financial strain and transportation difficulties compared to non-caregivers, with 63% of caregivers reporting at least one vulnerability compared to 47% of non-caregivers.
During the early days of the, caregivers had higher odds of experiencing new or worsening financial strain, as well as new interpersonal violence, food insecurity, transportation difficulties and housing insecurity. The results were published September 26 in the Annals of Family Medicine.
Seniors need 5+ hours of nightly sleep to prevent chronic disease, 25-year study suggests
McKnight’s - Five hours or less of sleep each night is a recipe for multimorbidity in seniors, say the authors of a new study.
Investigators examined sleep duration and its impact on health in more than 7,000 adults in the Whitehall II cohort study.
At 50, 60 and 70 years specifically, researchers studied the link between hours of sleep, mortality and number of chronic diseases diagnosed, or multimorbidity. Participants’ health outcomes were followed for 25 years.
Observation - With 25 years of followup, I would say pay attention to this study.
