Meet the 80-year-old Miss Universe Korea contestant proving age is just a number
CNN - Born almost a decade before the first Miss Universe contest was held in 1952, 80-year-old Choi Soon-hwa could now make history as the pageant’s oldest ever participant.
Report: People with dementia largely liked virtual programs during pandemic
McKnight’s - Virtual programs delivered during the pandemic were effective and useful for people living with dementia and their informal caregivers, a new study finds. Findings show that virtual initiatives can complement in-person programs to meet the needs of the population, the authors said.
Assisted living facilities vs. nursing homes: What to know about cost and care
CBS Money Watch - Happy to have been heavily quoted in CBS Money Watch. Although 98% of seniors 65 and over have health insurance, close to four million have unpaid medical bills, according to 2023 data from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. That's because most are covered by Medicare, which has huge coverage gaps. Fidelity found a 65-year-old will incur an estimated $165,000 in out-of-pocket healthcare expenses during retirement. That's more than a 5% increase from 2023 and more than double the costs from 2002. Unfortunately, these numbers don't include one of the biggest expenses seniors face: Long-term care.
He saved 200 lives on D-Day, and was finally honored for his heroism
WAPO - The full arc of this man’s story is the best and the worst of our nation’s character. Waverly B. Woodson Jr.’s D-Day heroics were cinematic.
After his landing craft was hit by a barrage of shell strikes and an underwater mine explosion, his body was shredded by mortar shrapnel. Still, Woodson set up a first aid station behind a rocky embankment on Omaha Beach, and began dragging wounded and dead men from the surf to his makeshift operating room.
For more than 30 hours, the 20-year-old Black medic from Philadelphia lived — under the worst possible conditions — his dream to be a surgeon. For his unparalleled bravery, our nation did nothing.
Late summer COVID deaths up by nearly half over 2023: AARP
McKnight’s - COVID-19 deaths at US nursing homes jumped 43% this summer versus summer 2023 as vaccination rates among nursing home residents and staff continued to lag. Resident deaths from the virus increased fivefold between May and August of this year, climbing from roughly 100 in the month ending May 26 to about 500 for the month ending Aug. 25, according to an AARP report. That compares to about 350 deaths for a similar period last August.
Is this dementia or normal brain aging? Here’s how to tell the difference.
WAPO - Many people worry they are developing serious cognitive deficits when these are in fact only minor and within the bounds of normal aging.
Plan ahead to keep pace with connectivity needs of health technology for residents
McKnight’s - The rapid pace of technological change is creating a digital divide within the industry, with some facilities struggling to keep up with the demands of a connected world.
“The thing that is really hard, and really amazing, is giving up on being perfect and beginning the work of becoming yourself.”
