Women Who Diet in Middle Age Protect Themselves From Dementia
Newsweek - Eating well in middle age may help to prevent the arrival of dementia, a new study has found.
Women who were on blood pressure-lowering diets in middle age were found to be around 17 percent less likely to show signs of cognitive decline and memory loss in later life. This diet is known as "Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension", or a DASH diet. It includes high consumption of plant-based foods rich in potassium, calcium and magnesium, and low in saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium and sugar.

Growing Old, for Better or Worse
NYT - Readers, including a 101-year-old woman, react to a guest essay by Roger Rosenblatt about the challenges of aging.
This Week’s Sponsor - Constant Contact
Out of nowhere, ChatGPT took the world by storm this year, thrusting Artificial Intelligence into the spotlight where it still remains today. So it may surprise you to learn that AI isn’t that new after all. 🧐
Have you used a website’s chat bot to help you find what you’re looking for? What about smart-assistants like Alexa or Siri? Yup – AI.
One of my favorite examples comes from Constant Contact, who’s been quietly revolutionizing the email marketing and CRM industry. With its cutting-edge technology, they’ve been incorporating AI automations into their platform for years making it easier for customers to create and send highly targeted and effective campaigns.
These identical twins dress alike daily. They are 84 years old.
WAPO - ‘We’ve always worn exactly the same thing,’ said Susan Briggs, who as a gag dresses with her twin as the sisters from the 1980’s horror film ‘The Shining’. Creepy for sure.
Why ‘The Golden Bachelor’ Terrifies Me
NYT - Television celebrates older people — but only for seeming like sexy young ones.Older Americans are dominating like never before, but what comes next?
Older Americans are dominating like never before, but what comes next?
WAPO - As the nation heads into an election year, American politics can look much like a gerontocracy, with the most likely presidential nominees being two men who would be octogenarians in the White House (President Biden is 80 already; former president and leading Republican candidate Donald Trump is 77). Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is 81; Sen. Charles E. Grassley (R-Iowa) is 90; and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is 82. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) died at 90 last month, following a visibly diminished capacity that prompted widespread discussion of the role that the oldest politicians are playing at the highest levels of government.
Yet even beyond Washington, a geriatric elite also controls many other aspects of an aging society, to such an extent that in some professions there are deep concerns about how those roles will be filled in decades to come.

102-year-old inventor, many (100-word) stories to tell
McKnight’s - At 102 years old, University Village Thousand Oaks resident Eddy Goldfarb has no shortage of stories to tell. But not many 102-year-olds can claim to have invented iconic toys such as Chattering Teeth, Stompers and KerPlunk. The Thousand Oaks, CA, senior living community resident compiled all of those stories into a recently published book, “It’s Going to Be a Big Day: 101 100-Word Stories by a 101-Year-Old.” But for those concerned about its length, fear not: All of the stories are approximately 100 words.
Study finds home health star ratings an accurate predictor of care quality
McKnight’s - Higher star ratings show a strong correlation to better patient outcomes, according to a study conducted at Syracuse University and published in Medical Care. Given the controversy over ratings, it is refreshing to see that perhaps there are some out there that truly represent the care and provide an objective data point when choosing care.
My Father Didn’t Want to Live if He Had Dementia. But Then He Had It.
NYT - From the author - Two years ago, when my father was dying of dementia, my siblings and I faced a terrible dilemma: Whose wishes for his medical treatment were we to honor? Those of my father back when he was a healthy, highly functioning geneticist? Or those of the simpler, weakened man my father had become?
